Abstract:

Abstract Introduction: external nasal walls are  an important factor  in the drainage or obstruction of the ostiomeatal complex, therfor  anatomical variations in the nasal cavity can elevate the risk of pathological sinus conditions. The aim of this study is to evaluate anatomical variations of paranasal sinuses and nasal cavities using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods:This investigation assessed CBCT images from 129 patients (aged 12-65 years; 82 females and 47 males) to specify the prevalence of anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. We analyzed the data using the Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and chi-square test. Results: anatomical variation was observed for accessory maxillary sinus ostium (100%). Significant relationships were also found between the prevalence of middle turbinate-normal (P=0.03), nasal spine (P=0.01), and patients’ age. Also, significant correlations were found between middle turbinate-normal (P=0.04), uncinate process-normal (P=0.02), uncinate process-lamina terminslis (P=0.001), and septal deviation (P=0.006) and patients’ sex. Significant correlations were also found between some anatomical variations (p<0.05). Conclusion:CBCT is a reliable method for assessing anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. When making preoperative assessments, surgeons and radiologists should be attention to the anatomical variations of the sinonasal region in order to inhibit perioperative complications.

anatomic variations of the paranasal sinuses on ct scan images

statement of problem: variation in paranasal sinus anatomy as shown on computed tomographic scans is of potential significance for it may pose risks during surgery or predispose to certain pathologic conditions. purpose: the aim of this study was to assess the relative frequency and concurrence of variations in paranasal sinus anatomy in a given population and to compare the results with previo...

Anatomic variations of sphenoid sinus from Cone Beam Computed Tomography images in the Iranian population

Aims: Sphenoid sinus is one of the most inaccessible paranasal sinus, and is closely correlated to many vascular and neural structures. Anatomic variation of the sphenoid sinus can complicate surgery in this area. The aim of the present investigation was to define the sphenoid sinus variations and the relevant structures using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: This cross-sectiona...

Anatomic variations of posterior paranasal sinuses and optic nerve.

Aim To define direct anatomical relations of the sphenoidal (alae minores), ethmoidal sinuses and optic nerve, with an emphasis on determining the effect of age on pneumatisation and dehiscence. Methods This retrospective, descriptive study involved 60 consecutive patients: 30 patients younger than 30 and30 patients older than 60 years of age. All patients underwent computerized tomography(CT)....

Anatomic Reference for Computed Tomography of the Paranasal Sinuses and Their Openings in the Rayini Goat

Objective-  to provide a reference anatomy of the paranasal sinuses of the goat by using computed tomographic modality. Design- Experimented study.   Animals- Five male Rayini goats.   Procedures- CT images were acquired from the head region perpendicular to the hard palate. CT windows were adjusted as necessary to  obtain the optimal image for the paranasal sinuses. The images were studie...
